Moana Nursery Named One of
Today’s Garden Center’s “Revolutionary 100”

RENO, Nevada – (March 16, 2010) Moana Nursery joined the ranks of the horticulture industry’s top independent garden centers when it was named one of Today’s Garden Center’s Revolutionary 100 for the second consecutive year.

The program, now in its fifth year, surveys garden center owners and managers and culminates in a listing of the 100 most revolutionary garden centers in the nation. It is open to all independent garden centers, large and small, and is based on leadership and innovation, not on size or revenue.

“Comparing our customer service, best practices and programs, staff knowledge, plant and product selection, value and facilities with thousands of garden centers across the USA  is an obvious way to make sure Moana Nursery is keeping its business model relevant and healthy for our northern Nevada/Tahoe customers.  We are pleased and honored to find out that we continue to be recognized as one of the best,” says Bruce Gescheider, owner.

Garden center owners and managers across the United States fill out an extensive online questionnaire covering topics such as employee training, industry involvement, profitability, marketing, use of technology, purchasing, and customer and community service. The entrants are ranked according to a point system, and the 100 top entries make the list.

Since 1967, locally owned Moana Nursery has been serving the landscape and gardening needs of northern Nevada and the high desert from three locations in Reno/Sparks. New at all three locations are exclusive Wild Birds Unlimited birding products. The Moana Lane garden center offers unique garden & home gifts, an outstanding selection of greenhouse plants and a full-service florist. The South Virginia Street garden center is also home to Tree Land (5 acres of specimen trees), Moana Rock and Moana Waterworks which specializes in water feature design/installation. The Pyramid Highway garden center is a full service nursery that will grow to almost 6 acres during the next two years . . . with its own Tree Land, greenhouse and Moana Rock yard for both retail and contractor customers.

“Each year this list honors the truly innovative and unique garden centers across the country that continue to change and evolve as their customers’ needs change,” says Jennifer Polanz, editor of Today’s Garden Center. “This year I think this award means even more because the independent retailers on the list were able to weather difficult economic conditions and serve their customers well.”

The 2010 Revolutionary 100 Awards program is sponsored by several leading industry suppliers including Fafard, Goldsmith Seeds, Nexus Greenhouse Corp. and the Voluntary Purchasing Group.

More information on the Revolutionary 100, including the complete listing, can be found in the January issue of Today’s Garden Center magazine and at www.Revolutionary100.com.

MOANA NURSERY OWNER AND STAFF COMPLETE WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED TRAINING

RENO, NEVADA – (March 2, 2010) Carol York, Wild Birds Unlimited (WBU) Manager, and Christie Gescheider, owner of the new Reno and Sparks Wild Birds Unlimited stores within a store, just returned from Indianapolis, Indiana where they completed an intense nine day training course covering all aspects of the backyard bird feeding hobby, the second most popular hobby in America.

York and Gescheider are knowledgeable in how to assist Reno/Sparks area residents in attracting their favorite local birds to their backyards.

“You need to create a habitat that contains one or more of the key elements that are essential for birds: food, water, shelter and a place to raise their young,” explained Gescheider. “If you include more than one you only increase your odds of attracting more birds and a greater variety, too.”

Gescheider also learned various operational aspects of a specialty retail business. Wild Birds Unlimited receives superior, fresh bird seed on a weekly basis, working with multiple vendors to ensure quality bird food is always in stock.

“Not only do you have the backroom operations of managing staff and inventory, but you also have the responsibility of ensuring that every customer has an exceptional shopping experience,” York explained.

Wild Birds Unlimited, located in all three Moana Nursery Garden Center Nurseries in Reno and Sparks, is a dedicated backyard bird feeding and nature specialty store, part of the original and largest franchise in the world.  With more than 275 locations in the United States and Canada, WBU specializes in bringing people and nature together with bird feeding and nature products, expert advice and educational events. Visit our website at www.reno.wbu.com or any of our three locations:  1100 W. Moana Lane, 11301 S. Virginia St., and 7655 Pyramid Hwy.

MOANA NURSERY ENCOURAGES THE PUBLIC TO
JOIN THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

RENO, NEVADA – (January 26, 2010) Moana Nursery, Reno’s premier nursery, garden center and home to Wild Birds Unlimited, encourages all northern Nevada bird watchers to take part in the 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, Friday, February 12, through Monday, February 15, 2010.  Participants in the free event will join tens of thousands of volunteers counting birds in their own backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.

Each checklist submitted by these "citizen scientists" helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society learn more about how the birds are doing—and how to protect them. Last year, participants turned in more than 93,600 checklists online, creating the continent's largest instantaneous snapshot of bird populations ever recorded.

“Taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to get outside with family and friends, have fun, and help birds—all at the same time," said Moana Nursery Owner Christie Gescheider. "Even if you can only identify a few species you can provide important information that enables scientists to learn more about how the environment is changing and how that affects our conservation priorities.”

Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from novice bird watchers to experts. Participants count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the event and report their sightings online at www.birdcount.org. Instructions and tally sheets are available at all three Moana Nursery locations. Their staff can answer questions about the count, and tally sheets can also be turned in at Moana Nursery.

GBBC has enormous potential both as an early warning system and in capturing and engaging people in more intensive sampling of birds across the landscape. Bird populations are constantly shifting and changing. For example, 2009 GBBC data highlighted a huge southern invasion of pine siskins across much of the eastern United States. Participants counted 279,469 pine siskins on 18,528 checklists, as compared to the previous high of 38,977 birds on 4,069 checklists in 2005. Failure of seed crops farther north caused the siskins to move south to find their favorite food.

On the www.birdcount.org website, participants can explore real-time maps and charts that show what others are reporting during the count. The site has tips to help identify birds and special materials for educators. Participants may also enter the GBBC photo contest by uploading images taken during the count. Many images will be featured in the GBBC website’s photo gallery. All participants are entered in a drawing for prizes that include bird feeders, binoculars, books, CDs, and many other great birding products.

For more information about the GBBC, visit the WBU website at www.birdcount.org. Or contact any one of the three Moana Nursery locations.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is made possible, in part, by generous support from Wild Birds Unlimited.

WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED FINDS NEW HOME AT MOANA NURSERY

RENO, NEVADA – (January 21, 2010) Moana Nursery, Reno’s premier nursery and garden center, announces the acquisition of the local Wild Birds Unlimited franchise. Wild Birds Unlimited uniquely enhances backyard bird feeding with expert, local advice and high desert products.  Now, exclusively at all three Moana Nursery locations, homeowners and hobbyists alike have access to superior and specialized wild bird products.  Northern Nevada’s premiere garden centers will host the pioneering and largest bird feeding retail franchises as a store-within-a-store.

“We are very excited about continuing to share backyard bird feeding with the residents of Reno and Sparks” stated owner Bruce Gescheider. “The hobby of backyard bird feeding is second only in popularity to gardening and is enjoyed by over 52.2 million North Americans.  That’s one in three families, and we know that many of these backyard bird feeding enthusiasts are from this area.  Adding a quality line of birding products is a natural extension to our garden centers since plants and birds have such a symbiotic relationship and rely upon each other for survival.  Just as we strive to be the local gardening experts, our association with WBU allows us to be the local birding experts.”

Wild Birds Unlimited, a unique retail business that brings people and nature together by offering expert advice and products for the backyard bird feeding hobbyist, has changed ownership. Moana Nursery completed its purchase of the local franchise which features regionally-formulated custom birdseed blends, birdfeeders, birdhouses, nature gifts, optics and more from Jacque Lowery (previously located in The Shoppers Square Mall on Plumb Lane).  Moana Nursery will have a Wild Birds Unlimited store-within-a-store at all three of its locations – 1100 W. Moana Lane, 11301 S. Virginia Street and 7655 Pyramid Highway, Sparks.

“We are very fortunate to have on staff Carol York who years of experience in backyard birding and has been an active member of the Lahontan Audubon Society since 1987, participating regularly in the annual Pyramid Lake Christmas Bird Count,” says Christie Gescheider.  “Jacque Lowery received extensive training at WBU headquarters in Indianapolis where she learned community outreach and presentation skills which she honed over the past five years.  She is a local wild bird expert and an active member of the Lahontan Audubon Society.  Jacque will assist us with community outreach and coordination of our plan for monthly birding seminars and events for all ages.”

Wild Birds Unlimited specializes in regionally-formulated custom seed blends developed specifically to attract birds that live in and frequent northern Nevada.  The blends are made from 100% seed so there is no-waste from cereal grain fillers birds don’t like. The store also offers the freshest seeds including sunflower, thistle and safflower as well as peanut hearts, cracked corn and millet.

Wild Birds Unlimited features the Supreme Wooden Birdfeeder line that was designed and patented by Jim Carpenter, president and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc.  Drawing from nearly two decades of backyard birdfeeding experience, the Supreme Feeder was designed with unique curved ends to give the consumer a 100% unobstructed view of the birds feeding.

“We will continue to bring people and nature together by offering expert advice for the hobby of backyard birdfeeding,” stated Christie Gescheider. “Our teammates will go through extensive training over the next two months to become Certified Bird feeding Specialists.  People come to us wanting to enjoy and learn more about backyard birdfeeding, so we believe it is important that our employees are able to give them the right advice and recommend the right products to make their backyard birdfeeding experience more pleasurable.  We are currently stocked with WBU high quality birdseed, feeders and accessories and are renovating each of our locations to accommodate the rest of WBU’s patented product, including the Advanced Pole System - a complete line of quality hanging and mounting hardware for all of your feeders.” A grand opening is planned for April, 2010; for more details visit www.moananursery.com.

The three Wild Birds Unlimited stores, now located in Reno and Sparks, are part of the original and largest franchise system of backyard bird feeding and nature specialty stores with over 300 locations throughout the United States and Canada.  Wild Birds Unlimited specializes in expert information and offers an exclusive line of products designed specifically for the hobby of backyard birdfeeding. Visit their website at www.wbu.com for more information.

TREE CARE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION AND PROFESSIONAL LANDCARE NETWORK CONSIDER NEW ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Potential to Create New Association to Further Advance Green Industry

LONDONDERRY, N.H. and HERNDON, Va., January 4, 2010 — The Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) and the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) recently met in Baltimore, Maryland to examine the potential for new organizational relationships in order to provide increased value to the green industry.

Boards for the two organizations issued the following statement: “We are excited by the potential of a new association that would unify our industry’s voice and increase our ability to serve and advance the interests of our members, our businesses, and the green care industry.”

“At a time when so many in our industry are offering a wide array of services, it makes good sense to have the representation of one organizational leader,” stated Bill Hildebolt, Ph.D., Landscape Industry Certified Manager & Technician, president of PLANET.

“Currently, when we promote the environmental benefits of our services, we do so holistically to include lawn care, landscape services, and tree care as well as the benefits of indoor plant care,” Hildebolt explained. When PLANET was formed in 2005, its leadership expressed the hope that it would be the first step in a process to expand the scope and capabilities of a single, larger national association for the industry. “Unification with TCIA would fulfill a longtime goal,” added Hildebolt.

“Seven years ago, TCIA embarked on a 10-year plan we call the Transformation of the Industry to advance the level of safety, professionalism, and public and governmental awareness of tree care companies. We have made great strides,” stated Terrill Collier, chair of the TCIA board. “Now, we have a historic opportunity to create a future that will redefine the green industry. Our industry sectors are more connected with each other and our customers than ever before. Together, we can lead the way for communities and consumers to protect the health and safety of our environment as the voice of the green industry. A unified organization can invest in technology and infrastructure that will allow the continued development of programs that benefit members as they seek to run even more successful companies.”

Both parties will continue discussions to create and design the plan for a new organization that will maintain the current community structure. This includes keeping PLANET’s specialty groups in place and keeping the TCIA community together, while also maintaining the positive characteristics that have made both organizations successful. To this effort, both boards have made a good faith commitment to create a new industry organization that would replace the existing associations and to design a successor organization that will increase value to everyone and be approved by both memberships.

Additional details will be worked out and reported on as more information becomes available. “We intend for our process to be transparent and collaborative,” said Collier. “To this end, we will work to keep all members of the green industry informed about our progress.”

The Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) is a 72-year-old public and professional resource on trees and arboriculture. It has more than 2,000 member companies who adhere to the highest industry standards for quality, safety, and ethics. TCIA develops safety and education programs, standards of tree care practice, and management information for arboriculture firms around the world. For more information, visit tcia.org.

RAIN BIRD ADDS NEW WR2 WIRELESS RAIN/FREEZE SENSORS TO ITS PORTFOLIO OF SMART PRODUCTS

Affordable, revolutionary sensors install quickly and easily to save time,
money and water

AZUSA, Calif. (January 5, 2010) — Using smart, weather-based irrigation technology is a very efficient way to maintain a healthy, beautiful landscape. As smart technology continues to emerge as a must-have for irrigation systems, more customers are asking contractors for options that are user-friendly, reliable and affordable. Now, Rain Bird has answered the needs of both customers and contractors with its new WR2 Wireless Rain and Rain/Freeze Sensors.

After installation and programming, the WR2 automatically senses and measures both rain and cold temperatures to prevent unnecessary irrigation, saving water and reducing wear on irrigation system components. The WR2 interrupts an irrigation controller’s pre-scheduled cycle if one of six programmable rainfall set points (ranging from 1/8” to ½”) or one of three temperature set points (41º, 37 º or 33º F) is satisfied. By choosing one of three irrigation modes, users can 1) allow sensor data to determine the irrigation schedule, 2) postpone irrigation for 72 hours regardless of sensor readings or 3) continue with scheduled irrigation for 72 hours regardless of sensor readings. The WR2 also features a “Quick Shut-Off” feature that suspends irrigation immediately during any rain event without requiring significant rainfall accumu lation.

The WR2 consists of three durable components: a controller interface with an easy-to-read LCD screen, a sensor unit and a self-leveling sensor mounting bracket. According to Brian Mueller, senior product manager for Rain Bird’s Accessories Division, the rain/freeze sensor’s design and best-in-class technology make installation both quick and easy.

“The WR2 is simple to install, even for a one-person crew,” Mueller said. “With intuitive icons, the controller interface is easy to program, and the sensor’s unique signal strength indicator allows contractors to quickly determine the best sensor location. The WR2’s versatile mounting bracket makes it possible to install the sensor on a gutter, fence or wall.”

Finding a spot to mount the WR2 is relatively effortless, as its superior signal strength can overcome most common line-of-sight obstructions such as trees, sheds and walls. Unlike other rain and rain/freeze sensors, the WR2 displays signal strength on both the sensor and the controller interface, making it possible for contractors to find the best mounting location without having to return to the controller. Internal antennas give the WR2 a clean and neat profile that keeps property owners happy.

The WR2’s sensor transmits weather data back to the controller interface every 45 seconds allowing the device to be highly responsive to changing environmental conditions. After programming the WR2 with the appropriate irrigation mode, rainfall and temperature set points, contractors can save their settings using the special “contractor default” feature, making it an easy, one-step process to restore the settings if they are modified.

While the WR2 provides obvious benefits to end users, it offers a number of advantages to irrigation contractors as well. “By installing the WR2, contractors can help customers save up to 35% less water, solidifying their reputations as water management experts.” Mueller explained. “Plus, because the WR2 is a simple and affordable smart technology upgrade, it offers contractors additional revenue opportunities.”

The WR2 Rain and Rain/Freeze Sensor is another example of Rain Bird’s continued dedication to helping both contractors and their customers save time, money and water. For more information about the WR2 or any of Rain Bird’s other quality irrigation accessories, visit www.rainbird.com or call 1-800-RAINBIRD.

Toro Introduces New TRX-26 Walk-Behind Trencher
The most powerful walk-behind trencher on the market

BLOOMINGTON, Minn.  - (January 5, 2010)  Toro is extending its line of dedicated walk-behind trenchers with the introduction of the Toro® TRX-26, the most powerful dedicated walk-behind trencher on the market. Boasting a 26-hp Kawasaki engine, the TRX-26 is ideal for utility workers, irrigation contractors and plumbers looking for the power of a ride-on trencher, with the maneuverability and control of a walk-behind.

“Based on feedback we received from contractors, we found there was a growing demand for a larger, more powerful walk-behind trencher,” says Greg Lawrence, product marketing manager for Toro. “To fill the gap between ride-ons and smaller walk-behinds, Toro designed the TRX-26 to be powerful, yet easy to use.”

The tracked walk-behind trencher market has grown since Toro first introduced the TRX-15 and TRX-19, but Toro’s line of TRX models still stands out for its ease of use and overall performance. Operator-friendly controls make the TRX models more productive and easier to learn and operate than many competitors’ tracked walk-behind trenchers, and a lower center of gravity means more stability on hills and uneven terrain. With many of the same features as the popular Toro TRX-15 and TRX-19 models, the TRX-26 makes trenching more efficient without putting any extra strain on the operator.

The patented Toro Dingo® TX-style control system on the TRX-26 makes it easy to control and eliminates the “jerk” steering required with handlebar control steering, allowing for smoother, more precise trenching. Three simple controls operate all traction and trenching functions, making the TRX-26 much easier to use and learn than other trenchers. And with its zero-turn capability and ground pressure as low as 4.1 psi, the TRX-26 has the ability to access confined spaces without damaging existing turf.

Contractors will also enjoy the low-profile tracked design of the TRX-26, which provides a low center of gravity and a large footprint for increased stability and added traction on hills and uneven terrain. The tracked design also gives the TRX-26 excellent cross-trenching capabilities. “Tracks help the operator maneuver over perpendicular trenches effortlessly, where wheeled units may get stuck in the existing trench. It’s rare that someone will only need to trench in straight lines, so the ability to cross-trench is important,” says Lawrence.

The TRX-26 can be outfitted with Toro’s 2-, 3- or 4-foot boom attachments, allowing it to trench up to 8-in wide and up to 48-in deep. With multiple boom options, contractors can choose the right size boom for their specific job, whether that’s the 4-foot boom for installing utility lines or the 2-foot boom for irrigation or drain tile applications. Other available options for the TRX-26 include soil chain, combo chain, crumber and backfill blade attachments.

“No matter what type of trenching job a contractor is working on, they’re going to be impressed by the performance of the TRX-26,” says Lawrence. “There is simply no other trencher on the market right now that can match its power and control.”

To learn more about the new Toro TRX-26 walk-behind trencher, visit your local Toro dealer; contact The Toro Company at 1-800-Dig-Toro (1-800-344-8676); send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ; or visit www.toro.com/trx.

Interior Plantscapers and Their Allied Industries Attending CalScape Optimistic About Long Term Outlook

UKIAH, CA — (December 9, 2009) Interior plantscape professionals, allied industry professionals, and their suppliers convened at CalScape Expo, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, 2009, for three days of events, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Wynn and Encore Resorts, fun and focused networking, seminars, and the two-day Exhibitor Showcase. Attendees from across the United States and Canada found the inspiration and camaraderie at CalScape especially valuable this year.  The theme “It's Easy Being Green” was carried out through the keynote and breakout topics, green wall and green products displays at the expo, and events such as the “Green” Color Bowl Contest.

A warm-up to the conference, and first of its kind event dubbed the “Reinvention forum,” evolved as a result of an internet chat room and addressed the opportunities and challenges facing the interiorscape industry today. The top six topics discussed were short term rentals; web-based sales; floral programs including floral delivery service and cut florals; residential service; exterior, patioscaping and landscaping; and industry pledge of professionalism. It was exciting to see the forum participants interact in person with their national colleagues and watch as other conference attendees offered their solutions for furthering the success of the industry.

Kicking off the seminars was keynote Paul Dolan with “Creating the Future: Growing a Business Revolution.” Dolan, as past president of Fetzer Vineyards, a brand owned by Brown Foreman, was responsible for building the first LEED certified winery and implementing a triple bottom line approach to management at Fetzer. Interiorscape industry leaders in attendance were interested to hear how to take the their companies in a sustainable direction in order to position themselves for new opportunities and market niches that arise as the economy recovers and how they can “make an idea’s time come.” Dolan’s breakout “Building Sustainable Companies – What We Can Learn from How One Man Accomplished It” followed along the lines of his keynote with a panel of industry leaders leading a question and answer session between suppliers and interiorscapers.

In “Job Costing – Getting More Out of QuickBooks” with Ryan Cope, AIPB, Customized Business Solutions Inc., participants learned how to get more out of their existing accounting software such as accurate pricing and job costing information. Using examples from real interiorscape companies, Cope showed how to convert a file that uses popular QuickBooks software to a streamlined system that will carry out different costing methods.

“Green Roofs and Living Walls: What You Need to Know”with Jim Mumford, CLP, GRP, Good Earth Living Architecture Inc. and GreenScapedBuildings, gave attendees the lowdown on entering these specialized markets. Mumford’s practical guidelines included information about everything from insurance requirements and structural concerns, to plant palettes.

Systems are the backbone of any successful organization and participants in “Essential Components of an Interiorscaper’s Database,” with Mike Lilek, Shining Brow Software, took the plunge into a deeper look at how a database can help organize critical information, measure profitability, support business strategies, and provide exceptional service. Lilek showed how to use database functions to organize operations, have integrated approach to contracts, customer inventory, replacement tracking, complaints, and billing.

Focusing on biological control for the interior “Environmentally Sensitive Pest Management for the Interior Landscape” featured Suzanne Wainwright-Evans, Buglady Consulting. This noted ornamental entomology expert, industry speaker and columnist with 18 years of experience, taught attendees how to identify the common pests of interior plants, common misdiagnosis, control methods that are sensitive to maintaining a balanced environment, application techniques, and much more.

Closing CalScape’s conference sessions was Janice Goodman, Cityscapes with “Fresh Sales Ideas – Green Solutions.” Goodman’s unique selling techniques have won her company several national awards and grown it into one of the largest interiorscape companies in the country. Toro Expands its Lineup of GrandStand™ Stand-On Mowers
Now available in 36-in, 40-in and 60-in models

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. —  (November 30, 2009) Toro is expanding its lineup of the popular GrandStand™ stand-on mowers to include 36-in, 40-in and 60-in models, in addition to the original 48-in and 52-in machines. The expanded lineup ensures that whether landscape contractors are working on a large commercial job or a small residential property, Toro has the right size mower to fit their needs.

“We received a lot of positive feedback after the launch of the GrandStand,” reveals Randy Harris, senior marketing manager for Toro Landscape Contractor Equipment. “Contractors were very impressed with the overall comfort, hillside performance and quality of cut of the GrandStand. But we also heard some contractors say they’d like a smaller model for working in confined spaces and getting through gates, as well as a bigger model for larger properties.”

With this goal in mind, Toro expanded on the success of the GrandStand mower with the addition of three new deck sizes — 36-in, 40-in and 60-in. The 36-in and 40-in models offer the compact size necessary to get through gates and tight spaces, while the 60-in model allows contractors to make quicker work of larger properties.

All models come equipped with Toro’s industry-acclaimed TURBO FORCE® cutting deck, which produces the high-quality after-cut appearance contractors are looking for, even when mowing long, wet grass. Select models include Toro’s patented adjustable baffle, which allows landscape professionals to fine-tune their cutting performance in order to conquer changing seasons or turf conditions without sacrificing quality or efficiency.

Constructed of high-strength, 7-gauge steel, the TURBO FORCE cutting deck includes the industry’s most durable spindle assemblies to absorb impact loads and distribute them across a broader area of the deck shell. Standard ¼-in thick, high-strength alloy steel blades resist flexing and wear, and the deck’s “bull-nose” front bumper is designed with a raised leading edge that delivers a crisp, level cut with reduced plowing, plus an integral underskirt that minimizes blowout.

“With more landscape contractors using stand-on mowers every day, it was important for Toro to expand its line of GrandStand mowers to meet the unique needs of each contractor,” explains Harris. “Without compromising the speed, performance, comfort or durability of the original GrandStand, Toro developed these three new models so contractors could choose the right size mower for their particular job.”

All Toro GrandStands feature the exclusive, patent-pending Flex-Ride operator platform suspension system that offers a smooth ride, reducing operator fatigue. The suspension system is self-compensating, to oblige operators of differing weights. A versatile fold-up platform reduces the need for a separate walk-behind mower by offering operators ride and walk capabilities to accommodate various jobsite conditions. The platform’s large surface area also gives operators the freedom to adjust their position and shift their weight to comfortably operate the mower throughout the day. An anti-fatigue rubber mat with a non-slip surface has been incorporated into the platform design to reduce vibration transmitted to the operator, as well as increase the operator’s traction on the machine. The weight balance allows the machine to perform well on hillsides and enhances handling around obstacles, while optional counterbalance weights give operators the ability to customize the distribution of weight to suit individual preferences.

Easy-to-use controls represent another operator benefit. The twin-lever, low-effort steering control levers allow more precise control of the unit and eliminate the need for operators to remove their hands from the steering levers to change directions. The adjustable speed control limits the top-end speed of the GrandStand mower without restricting the control lever travel. This feature reduces the learning curve for new operators, allows for precise trimming in delicate areas, and enhances machine control in the walk-behind mode. Height-of-cut adjustments also can be made from the operator’s platform.

Operators will enjoy the speed, compact size and 360° visibility of the GrandStand mower. The ground speed is faster than mid-size walk-behind mowers and is comparable to moderate-sized, zero-turn riders. The GrandStand mower is smaller and lighter than commercial riding mowers and takes up less trailer space. The mower’s compact design allows it to easily maneuver in tight spaces and pass beneath low-hanging branches, and its light footprint is less destructive to sensitive turf than riding mowers. Operators have a clear view of all sides of the mower, resulting in less damage to the landscape and higher-quality work. Also, operators are able to easily get on and off this machine, exerting far less effort compared to a rider.

Like all of Toro’s products, the GrandStand mower is designed, built and backed by The Toro Company.

“Toro’s goal has always been to provide the right equipment to meet the needs of contractors,” says Harris. “With the addition of three new deck sizes to the GrandStand mower lineup, we’re giving contractors more choices while still providing them with the outstanding quality of product they’ve come to expect from Toro.”

“Stand-ons are by far the most productive commercial mowers available today, but there is a large difference in quality, operator comfort, dependability, and overall satisfaction with the different manufacturers.  The Toro GrandStand is a well designed, well thought out mower and crews will be fighting for who gets to use it,” comments Paul Sikkema, owner of TodaysMower.com

National Organic Leaders to Present 2010 Midwest Organic Lawn Care & Landscaping Conference

MADISON, WI. — The 2010 Midwest Organic Lawn Care and Landscaping Conference will bring the nation’s preeminent horticultural leaders to the Midwest for a first-of-its-kind two day symposium focusing on environmentally acceptable solutions for an evolving industry.

Featuring SafeLawns Foundation founder Paul Tukey as keynote presenter, along with renowned landscape architect Howard Garrett, revolutionary arborist Peter Wild, and award-winning golf course superintendent Jeff Carlson, the conference will be presented by Chickity Doo Doo Organic Fertilizer on Jan. 28-29, 2010, at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison. Open to the public — as well as lawn and landscape professionals, golf course managers and superintendents, government officials, soil and agronomy scientists and municipal officials and grounds staff — the seminars will showcase successful techniques to save time, money and protect water supplies as well as human and animal health.

“We often hear that individuals, families and companies want to participate in the ‘green’ movement in practical and meaningful ways,” said John Weiss, president of Chickity Doo Doo of Madison, an emerging national leader in the organic marketplace. “Lawn care is one practical method that has immediate benefits for your community, family and pets. The problem is that consumers and lawn care professionals have many questions on how to make the transition. As a result we partnered with Paul Tukey and the SafeLawns Foundation who have been recognized as industry leaders. ”

Tukey, author of the best-selling book The Organic Lawn Care Manual, said he personally selected Garrett, from Dallas, Texas, Carlson of Martha’s Vineyard, and Wild, from Boston, Massachusetts to join him at the Madison event.

“All of these men have been offering organic, effective solutions in the field for more than 30 years,” said Tukey. “Howard Garrett has built natural, sustainable landscapes at corporate headquarters across the country and advised dozens of golf courses on making the organic transition.  Peter Wild has run an organic tree care company since 1977 and is considered a leading expert.  He has also patented tree injection techniques for dealing with exotic invasive pests, including the emerald ash borer that is decimating some Midwest forests. When it comes to organic care of golf courses, Jeff Carlson is the world’s leader. Every single day he creates championship level playing conditions without pesticides.”

The 2010 Midwest Organic Lawn Care and Landscaping Conference will be divided into two days, with Jan. 28 focusing on the needs of professionals across all landscape disciplines.  The Jan. 29 session will showcase political trends and practical solutions for municipalities, with a special emphasis on emerging pesticide and fertilizer restrictions.

All attendees may attend both days’ sessions, which will include the Jan. 28 evening premiere of A Chemical Reaction (www.ChemicalReactionMovie.com), the critically acclaimed film produced by Paul Tukey that focuses on the first town in North America ever to ban lawn and garden pesticides.

USGS Report Emphasizes Contributions
of Efficient Irrigation to Nation's Water Supply

FALLS CHURCH, V.A. (November 2, 2009) - During a keynote address given Oct. 29 at the National Press Club, Anne Castle announced that a U.S. Geological Survey report, Summary of Estimated Water Use in the United States in 2005, states that Americans used 410 billion gallons of water per day; slightly less than what was consumed in 2000. The decline was specifically attributed to the increased use of more efficient irrigation systems and alternative technologies at power plants.

"Because electricity generation and irrigation together accounted for a massive 80 percent of our water use in 2005, the improvements in efficiency and technology gives us hope for the future," said Castle.

The report states that in 2005, the majority of irrigation withdrawals and irrigated acres were in the Western states, but significant increases in irrigation have occurred in some Southeastern states. The report continues to state that even though the amount of irrigated acres throughout the United States has increased, irrigation application rates have decreased steadily from 1950 to 2005; a change that is directly attributed to the increased use of more efficient irrigation systems. Overall, the report concluded that irrigation withdrawals accounted for 31 percent of total withdrawals and 37 percent of freshwater withdrawals.

"We are pleased to see that irrigation efficiency played such a major role in decreasing our nation's overall water use, despite a 30 percent population increase during the past 25 years," said IA Federal Affairs Director John Farner. Garvin named Interim President & CEO of Tree Care Industry Association

LONDONDERRY, NH (November 2, 2009) – Mark Garvin, chief program officer, has been named interim president and chief executive officer of the Tree Care Industry Association, effective Nov. 7, 2009. Garvin succeeds Cynthia Mills, who notified the board of directors Sept. 8 that she would be leaving to take a new position and manage family responsibilities.

Garvin has served in progressively responsible positions at TCIA since joining the organization in 1996. He was promoted to chief program office in 2008 from vice president of public policy & communications. As CPO, he led the marketing for all TCIA programs, including membership, Accreditation, Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP), Partners Advancing Commercial Treecare (PACT), Voice for Trees PAC, Winter Management Conference and TCI EXPO.

“I know that Mark will provide stable transition to new leadership during his tenure as interim president,” said Terrill Collier, TCIA chair. “He has the institutional knowledge from the more than 13 years he’s spent at the association. He has managed most of the programs and services of TCIA during his time here.”

Mills noted that Garvin has been heavily involved the past few years in moving the Transformation of the Industry forward. “He is well prepared for this role. I am delighted to see him recognized by the board for his contributions to TCIA’s success.”

In a message to the TCIA community, Collier recognized the contribution Mills has made to TCIA during her 10-year tenure. “Our organization achieved growth in membership, financial stability, a strategic plan to transform the industry, increased safety of workers, and established Accreditation for tree care companies under her leadership.”

Garvin will officially head the organization after the close of TCI EXPO in Baltimore on Saturday, Nov. 7.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues and the membership of TCIA to continue the association’s strategic plan,” said Garvin. “The association and the industry have weathered the current economic storm well so far, and I anticipate helping guide both back to growth and profitability.”

A search committee has been formed to proceed with the next steps in identifying a president and chief executive officer for TCIA.

The Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), founded in 1938 as the National Arborist Association, is a 71-year-old public and professional resource on trees and arboriculture. It has more than 2,000 member companies who recognize stringent safety and performance standards and who are required to carry liability insurance. TCIA has the nation’s only Accreditation program which helps consumers find tree care companies that have been inspected and accredited based on: adherence to industry standards for quality and safety; maintenance of trained, professional staff; and dedication to ethics and quality in business practices. RAIN BIRD'S NEW SMRT-Y SOIL MOISTURE SENSOR KIT MAKES SMART TECHNOLOGY EASY AND AFFORDABLE

AZUSA, Calif. (Oct. 5, 2009) -- Smart irrigation technology is one of the best ways to save time, money and water while maintaining beautiful, healthy landscapes. Until recently, however, cost and complexity have made smart technology impractical for use in many residential or light commercial applications. Now, the new SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor Kit from Rain Bird has the power to change that by giving contractors an easier, more affordable way to upgrade both new and existing irrigation systems to smart technology.

After the SMRT-Y (pronounced "smart why") is installed, its digital sensor measures absolute soil moisture levels every ten minutes and relays that information back to the SMRT-Y controller interface. When soil moisture levels are above a pre-determined threshold, the controller interface interrupts the irrigation schedule that's been programmed into the system's timer. If the sensor recognizes dry soil conditions, the system's next watering cycle will proceed as originally scheduled. This closed-loop feedback process means that actual plant and turf conditions at the roots are being communicated back to the controller for a truly accurate snapshot of a landscape's moisture needs.

The SMRT-Y consists of two basic components: a digital in-ground sensor and a special SMRT-Y controller interface that mounts next to the system's irrigation timer. Constructed from high-grade 304 stainless steel, the SMRT-Y's advanced TDT (Time Domain Transmissometry) digital sensor offers accuracy and long-lasting durability that can withstand the harshest outdoor conditions. The SMRT-Y's digital controller interface features an electronic panel with touchpad keys that allow users to display soil conditions (moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity), moisture threshold, and history of the last seven irrigation cycles. Together, these two components provide contractors with an economical, easy-to-install irrigation system add-on that can deliver significant water savings of 40% or more.

According to Rick Foster, senior product manager for Rain Bird's Accessories Division, the new SMRT-Y soil moisture sensor is built to outlast and outperform all other soil moisture sensors on the market. "The SMRT-Y can monitor absolute, rather than relative, moisture levels.  That makes it very different and more reliable than other soil moisture sensors on the market today," Foster explained. "It's unaffected by temperature fluctuations or soil chemistry changes, variables that have historically compromised the accuracy of other soil moisture sensors."

Capable of interfacing with any irrigation timer, contractors can install and activate the SMRT-Y in just a few easy steps. The first step is to bury the SMRT-Y's sensor component in a suitable location within the landscape and then wire it to any irrigation valve. After wiring the SMRT-Y controller interface to the system's irrigation timer, users can activate the product's "auto-set" feature to establish the lawn's unique moisture threshold.

Because the SMRT-Y offers water savings of 40% or more, it can often pay for itself in less than a year--and the benefits don't stop there. "Due to its unique ability to provide closed-loop feedback, the SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor Kit allows the landscape to virtually 'tell' the irrigation system when it needs water," Foster added. "This technology helps homeowners avoid the common tendency to overwater their lawns, making it much easier to sustain healthy landscapes that are less susceptible to fungus and shallow root growth."

The SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor Kit also gives contractors an opportunity to reach out to existing customers and offer an easy upgrade that can make an immediate, positive impact upon landscapes and the amount of water used to maintain them. PLANET CERTIFICATION PROGRAM UNDERGOES REBRANDING

HERNDON, Va., October 1, 2009 — The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) and its International Certification Council (ICC) are pleased to announce that beginning January 2010, all PLANET-certified individuals will be called Landscape Industry Certified. “The ICC has worked tirelessly to align the PLANET certification program with national standards and follow a robust strategic planning initiative,” says ICC Chair Joel Hafner, Landscape Industry Certified Manager and Technician.

The new brand name, Landscape Industry Certified, consolidates specialties of green industry certification under one umbrella. Now, everyone who is PLANET certified will be identified with this universal title. “Our ultimate goal is to create demand by consumers for Landscape Industry Certified individuals,” explains Hafner. “This rebranding effort demonstrates growth in our industry and in our careers.”

Landscape Industry Certified speaks very clearly to the end user. No longer will lengthy explanations about what the acronyms behind a signature mean. It also has universal appeal as the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) has adopted the new brand name and logo for its professional development program. This will pave the way for broader recognition of industry certification.

The PLANET certification program continuously seeks to align itself with the certification industry’s best practices as defined by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) standards. NCCA is the accrediting body of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), and PLANET is a proud member of NOCA.

RENO LAWN & LANDSCAPE FIRES UP CHARITY WITH A $5,000 MATCH

RENO, NV – September 23, 2009 – Landscape contractor, Reno Lawn & Landscape has stepped up its community commitment with a generous challenge to locals who enjoy the outdoors.  The landscaper has donated $5,000 in a dollar-for-dollar donation match for quality-of-life leader, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). The active community organization is in need of funds to support educational and beautification programs such as Waste Warriors, Adopt-A-Spot, Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup and the Annual Litter Index to name a few.

Reno Lawn & Landscape has committed to matching every donation contributed to KTMB up to $5,000.  “Essentially, what Reno Lawn & Landscape has done is give us an opportunity to raise $10,000 when it’s all said and done,” says KTMB Executive Director, Christi Cakiroglu. “That means every donation has double the impact – just $5 instantly turns into $10 and so on, and that is really exciting,” exclaimed Cakiroglu.

Contributions have become more difficult to come by in this local economic climate, said Cakiroglu.  For a non-government agency operating solely on the charity of the community, this matching plan will give our programs a much needed lift. “And we recently launched a feature where donations can be made right on the KTMB.org web site. It’s safe and takes about a minute.” Cakiroglu says.

Community Liaison for Reno Lawn & Landscape, Steve Fine, is excited to partner with the non-profit. “We really hope the residents of the Truckee Meadows can rise to the challenge and take full advantage of this match,” says Fine. “KTMB is so dedicated to maintaining our high-quality of living – both in the outdoors and in our neighborhoods – it ties in perfectly with our objective of keeping your landscape beautiful. We’re so excited we’re already in talks to match funds next year too.”

For twenty years now, our community has benefitted from a number of long-running volunteer and service programs - many of which you probably didn’t know were run by KTMB.  Take recycling for example.  Have you ever recycled your old phone book at local drop-off locations? They have recycled more than 100 tons of these old books this year. What about your Christmas tree after the holiday?  You and your neighbors were able to recycle 11,000 these trees just last year thanks to this organization.  And the chips help year-round in park, river and open space projects to prevent weeds, erosion and promote beautification.

About Reno Lawn & Landscape

Contractor’s Alert!
OSHA-10 AND 30 TRAINING COURSES

To enhance safety in the construction workplace, the 2009 Nevada Legislature enacted Assembly Bill Number 148 that requires workers to complete an Occupational Safety and Health Administration “OSHA” 10 Hour safety course and supervisors to complete a 30-Hour OSHA Training course no later than 15 days after being hired.  The measure takes effect Jan. 1, 2010. Once the courses are completed, the construction worker will receive a “completion card” that must be presented to the employer.  The “completion card” is valid for five (5) years.

OSHA’s 10-hour construction course is an introduction to OSHA and its Construction Standards, covering several subparts of the standard with emphasis on Nevada enforcement activities. OSHA’s 30-hour supervisor training provides training in OSHA’s Construction Standards, and is an expanded version of the 10-hour course.

Both training courses emphasize construction safety, health hazard recognition and prevention standards developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor.

The State of Nevada Department of Business and Industry’s Division of Industrial Relations is responsible for approving the OSHA-10 and OSHA-30 courses. Federal OSHA training guidelines that parallel Nevada’s requirements are available at the OSHA public website at: www.osha.gov

Hunter Industries Announces Launch of Wireless Handheld Decoder Programmer

San Marcos, CA — August 28, 2009 — Hunter Industries has introduced the first wireless decoder programmer and diagnostic tool for the company’s ICD two-wire decoder control systems. With an August 28 release date, the ICD-HP (ICD Handheld Programmer) is approximately the size and construction of a professional technician’s multimeter, and is designed to simplify installation, maintenance, and diagnostics of two-wire decoder controlled irrigation systems.
The battery- or USB-powered ICD-HP permits a full range of functions with installed decoders, without having to disconnect waterproof connections of any kind. The instrument’s “programming cup” communicates with the decoders through the waterproof module using a patented wireless induction technology. The programming cup is supplied with six feet (two meters) of cable, to allow the operator to slip it over an in-ground decoder while standing or kneeling above the valve box.
Irrigation professionals can then set or change the address of an installed decoder without disconnecting, but that is only the beginning, according to Hunter Product Manager Dave Shoup.

“The ICD-HP can turn stations on and off, measure the current draw, and check the solenoids, without disconnecting a single wire,” said Shoup. “But it’s not just about convenience. The ICD-HP also gets more out of your existing decoders, by enabling features that the controller just couldn’t do alone.”
For example, the ICD-HP can address multi-station decoders in any order and allow stations to be skipped (left blank) for future expansion, according to Shoup. The ICD-HP can also flash update the decoder’s operating system to take advantage of new features as they are developed. The programmer also has a built-in multimeter for measuring line voltage and built-in sensor testers for both click and flow type sensors.

“This is what innovation is all about,” said Jeff Kremicki, Senior Product Manager of Electronics for Hunter Industries. “The field guys think it is great. We can’t get our test units back from them, because they won’t let them go.” Field testers point to the time savings in diagnostics and system setup as key benefits of the programmer.

The ICD-HP is a “ruggedized” design meant for outdoor irrigation work. It includes a high-visibility shock absorbing cover, splash-resistant controls, and a potted waterproof programming cup. The backlit control screen has adjustable contrast for outdoor conditions, and is selectable to 5 different operating languages.

The ICD-HP is delivered in an industrial grade resin carrying case, complete with cables and programming cup. The programmer works on either AA batteries or USB cable power, both included.
The programmer can either be carried into the field or used in a “bench mode” with un-installed decoders, by attaching the decoder wires to the meter for power and running the programmer on USB power.

ICD-HP has global approvals for electrical and emissions safety, and is selectable from American to standard international (SI) units of measurement. The patented ICD-HP is available worldwide from authorized Hunter Irrigation distributors.
Hunter Industries is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of irrigation equipment for the landscape and golf course industries. From drip irrigation to controllers, sensors, and central controls, Hunter produces a complete spectrum of water-efficient products for commercial and residential applications. With more than 250 product patents and 40 trademarks to its credit, Hunter is considered the innovation leader in irrigation equipment.

RAIN BIRD INTRODUCES NEW XQ DISTRIBUTION TUBING
FOR DRIP IRRIGATION

AZUSA, Calif. (August 10, 2009) -- Untangling clumps of distribution tubing used to be a time-consuming and tedious chore for contractors who install drip irrigation systems. Now, with its self-extracting coil feature, Rain Bird's new XQ ¼" Distribution Tubing makes that dreaded task a thing of the past.

Designed for use with all drip irrigation systems, XQ ¼" Distribution Tubing is constructed using a unique blend of UV-resistant polymers that give it the flexibility of vinyl and the hold of poly. Able to be installed both above and below grade, XQ Distribution Tubing has a textured finish for easier handling. Its 60-psi rating exceeds that of the competition, and it's compatible with all ¼" transfer fittings and all barbed outlet ports. However, according to Kevin Rantin, product manager for Rain Bird's Landscape Drip Division, the tubing's most noticeable feature may be the manner in which it's dispensed and stored.

"Our XQ Distribution Tubing is packaged in a self-extracting coil," Rantin explained. "This unique coiling method allows the tubing to remain intact as it's pulled out of the coil, making it easier to both use and store. The self-extracting coil also eliminates the waste that can happen when tubing gets tangled and knotted."

Sold individually, by the pallet or by the truckload, XQ ¼" Distribution Tubing is available in self-extracting coils of 100, 250 and 1,000 feet in length. The 1,000-foot coil is also available in a patent-pending XQ BucketTM that makes using and storing large coils even easier and more efficient.

For more information about Rain Bird's new XQ ¼" Distribution Tubing or any of Rain Bird's other quality products for drip irrigation, visit www.rainbird.com/drip or call 1-800-RAINBIRD.

SIGNATURE LANDSCAPES EMPLOYEES RECEIVE NATIONAL LANDSCAPE CREDENTIAL

RENO, NV – July 8, 2009  –  Landscape technicians, Gunner MacCallum and Ken Wittenberg of Signature Landscapes passed their Certified Landscape Technician (CLT) assessments in June to join an elite group of only 58 CLT accredited technicians in the state of Nevada. They each focused on the landscape irrigation specialty.

MacCallum, already a Certified Nevada Nurseryman with eight years nursery experience and four in the field said the toughest part of the process was the tight time constraints put on by the testers. “I’ve put together thousands of valves, front yards and more, but we’ve always had the time to make sure it was done right,” he said. “The pressure of time limit was a real challenge, but it all worked out perfectly.”

According to Wittenberg, this award is only the beginning. “I’m already looking forward to taking the Ornamental [specialty] next year.” He wishes to achieve all specialty accreditations to become the go-to guy in the industry. Wittenberg has been working in the nursery and landscaping trade since 1994.

Jim Stanhouse, CLT director and test administrator is a strong proponent of the entire CLT certification program, “Each one of the CLTs has used the program as a springboard to not only their careers but to their lives,” says Stanhouse. “In most cases, I have seen the guys’ confidence grow so much that it not only allowed them to advance in their jobs, but they feel that certification has validated their skills and now they want to share that knowledge with the next level.”

According to PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network and the international association administering the testing, the CLT exam is a two-day-long event that tests the candidate’s ability to properly use equipment, demonstrate an understanding of handling plants and related materials, and pass written general comprehension tests — all done under the pressure of strict time frames. Passing the Irrigation test demonstrates that a person has the skills to install and maintain an irrigation system and understands the fundamentals of water management.

SafeLawns Launches “Get Your Grass off Gas” Campaign with Black and Decker
An Effort to Reduce Mower Emissions and Educate Homeowners about Greener Lawncare

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 5, 2009) — With lawn-mowing season upon us across the United States, a nationwide “Get Your Grass off Gas” campaign this summer will aim to reduce air pollution related to gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Beginning June 1, the SafeLawns Foundation will work with Black & Decker, which specializes in electric and battery-powered lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers and other tools to educate homeowners that they can care for their lawns and yards without using gas-powered equipment.

“Statistics show that up to 10 percent of air pollution in the summertime in this country is related to mowing, trimming and blowing lawns,” said SafeLawns founder Paul Tukey, a best-selling author and organic lawn expert. “Converting to equipment that utilizes electric cords or rechargeable batteries can reduce this pollution by up to 90 percent according to the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. With the advances that Black & Decker and others have made in battery and electric technology, it is now viable for most small landscapes to be tended without burning gas and oil.”

The campaign will include media appearances, public service announcements and web-based educational information including downloadable handouts and how-to videos. With heightened awareness of global warming, the Get Your Grass off Gas message will empower homeowners to make a difference in their own back yard.

“Gasoline-powered lawnmowers produce hydrocarbons (a major component of smog), particulate matter (which damages respiratory systems), carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas) and carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming),” said Tukey. “And as a personal matter for everyone, when you use a gas-powered piece of equipment, you and your family are breathing those toxic fumes. I believe electric and battery power is a better way to go, all the way around.”

DeAnn Romjue, Director for Black & Decker’s Outdoor Products division says that “by choosing electric or cordless outdoor power equipment, you’re not only helping the environment, your neighborhood and your family, but you are also freeing yourself of the mess and hassles associated with gas-powered products. All of our products offer a convenient and easy way to maintain your lawn, while producing zero emissions in your yard.”

Homeowners can visit www.cordlessmowing.com and click on ‘green yard care’ to learn more about Black & Decker’s emission-free in your yard outdoor products, and to download information. Visit www.SafeLawns.org for videos and other information related to the Get Your Grass off Gas campaign.

The SafeLawns.org mission is to create a broad based coalition of nonprofit and for-profit organizations committed to educating society about the benefits of organic lawn care and gardening, and effect a quantum change in consumer and industry behavior.

Toro Searches For “Smoothest Operator”
Smooth Operator Video Challenge lets contractors show off their smooth skills

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. [May 15, 2009] There are many ways to be smooth, but Toro wants to know what makes a smooth operator. As part of its newly launched “Smooth Operator Video Challenge,” the turf-care leader is asking landscape contractors to demonstrate how Toro’s newest mowers take the jolts out of their jobs and the bumps out of their business.

Contractors are encouraged to create and submit short video testimonials of the new Z Master® G3 zero-turn rider and GrandStand™ stand-on mower in action, showcasing their smoother ride, enhanced productivity and improved quality of cut. In exchange for their participation, contest entrants will earn a chance to win a business-building prize package from The Toro Company. The videos should specifically address at least two of the following mower criteria: handling on hillsides, comfort and fatigue reduction, maneuverability, ease of use and service, overall cutting performance, and finished appearance.

Videos should be uploaded to YouTube.com and then linked to Lawnsite.com/tv during the contest period of May 15 through July 31, 2009. Videos should be 1-2 minutes long and include footage of the mower(s) in action. Creativity and originality are encouraged, although safety while shooting the video should be a top priority.

Once the videos are posted, visitors are encouraged to log on to Lawnsite.com (new users will need to register) to rank the videos during the contest period, and the highest-ranked videos will advance to the final round of voting. Final voting will take place August 1 through August 31, 2009, and the winner will be announced after Labor Day.

The highest-ranked video from the final round will receive the grand prize, a “Smooth Out Your Business” Toro prize package, which includes direct mail pieces and advertising created and placed by Toro to help contractors build their business. And because running a business shouldn’t be all work and no play, the package also includes a four-night stay at a Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida, plus four Park Hopper passes and a special behind-the-scenes tour with Disney’s landscape and horticulture specialists.

Second- and third-place winners will receive Smooth Operator and Toro apparel.

The Video Challenge represents the second phase of Toro’s Smooth Operator Tour, which began in March and included tour stops at more than 120 locally owned Toro dealerships across the country. During the tour stops, contractors were able to learn more about the new Toro GrandStand stand-on mower and Toro
Z Master G3 zero-turning radius mower, plus test drive the new machines.

The official contest rules for the video challenge can be found at Toro.com/smooth, along with detailed instructions for uploading videos to YouTube.com and Lawnsite.com.

RAIN BIRD LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE WATER SAVINGS REBATE RESOURCE GUIDE
Guide Provides State-by-State Listings of Rebates and Incentives for
Water-efficient Irrigation Products

AZUSA, CA (May 4, 2009) - Many water agencies, states and municipalities are currently offering rebate and incentive programs intended to encourage the use of water-efficient irrigation products and landscaping techniques. Now, Rain Bird has made it easy for landscape and irrigation contractors to access the most up-to-date information about these programs by launching an online rebate and incentive resource guide at http://www.rainbird.com/iuow.

Organized by state, Rain Bird's online resource guide is designed to help green industry professionals and their customers learn about the various financial incentives available to offset the cost of irrigation system upgrades, including the implementation of products such as ET controllers, rotary nozzles, drip irrigation systems and rain sensors. According to Dave Johnson, Rain Bird's director of corporate marketing, the rebate and incentive programs detailed within the online guide encourage both contractors and their customers to implement water-saving technology.

"As local water districts and municipalities continue to increase water rates and levy necessary watering restrictions, water conservation is no longer a choice--it is the responsibility of each and every one of us," Johnson said. "Rain Bird's resource guide enables homeowners, businesses and green industry professionals to easily locate irrigation water savings rebate programs and incentives in their regions. The guide also empowers these individuals to make smart choices that will lead to more water efficient landscapes, and ultimately, a sustainable water supply for future generations."

Rain Bird's online guide includes descriptions of currently available rebate and incentive programs, including start and stop dates, related Web sites and contact information. A list of Rain Bird products eligible for financial incentives is also available.

"Often, both homeowners and green industry professionals are unaware of local water conservation incentive programs, or they become frustrated because they can't find the latest information," Johnson added. "By compiling all of the information and resources necessary to redeem these incentives into one location, Rain Bird has made it possible for professionals and their clients to take advantage of these programs and upgrade to more water-efficient landscapes in a cost-effective manner."

Rain Bird's launch of the product rebate resource guide is the most recent example of the company's dedication to creating programs and initiatives that boost awareness of water conservation. Rain Bird devotes significant resources to its Intelligent Use of Water public initiatives, which include a series of white papers; public service announcements; membership on the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the steering committee advising the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its WaterSense product labeling program; bi-annual Intelligent Use of Water Summits; partnerships with non-profit organizations; development and support of elementary and middle school curriculums; and participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade®, an annual worldwide stage to communicate the need for water conservation.

Rain Bird Introduces New Pressure-Regulating Quick-Check Basket Filters For Drip Irrigation

Integrated 40 PSI Pressure Regulator Enhances Reliability and Saves Money

(March 24, 2009) -- Installing and maintaining low volume irrigation systems just got even easier and more efficient. Rain Bird's NEW Pressure-Regulating, Quick-Check Basket Filter combines pressure regulation and filtration into one compact unit for enhanced reliability and faster installation.

Available separately or fully integrated into Rain Bird's 1" and 1.5" high-flow commercial control zone kits, the Pressure-Regulating (PR), Quick-Check Basket Filter is the latest addition to Rain Bird's broad line of drip irrigation products. Its 200 mesh (75 micron) stainless-steel filter element protects drip irrigation components from debris, while its built-in 40 psi pressure regulator ensures that the system receives optimum water pressure. According to Kevin Rantin, product manager for Rain Bird's Landscape Drip Division, the new PR Quick-Check Basket Filter's dual purpose offers a number of other benefits as well.

"By integrating filtration and pressure regulation into one product, we're saving time and money for contractors and specifiers," Rantin said. "When the PR Quick-Check Basket Filter is integrated into one of our high-flow commercial control zone kits, the control zone kit is much more compact, allowing it to fit into smaller, less expensive valve boxes. It also takes less time to assemble because it requires fewer connections, reducing both labor and maintenance costs."

Rain Bird's PR Quick-Check Basket Filter's quick-check indicator also takes the guesswork out of maintenance with its unique display that clearly shows when the filter needs to be cleaned. When cleaning does become necessary, the filter's unique design allows for easy vertical access to the element, preventing debris from falling into the line.

For more information about the Rain Bird Pressure-Regulating, Quick-Check Basket Filter or any of Rain Bird's other quality drip irrigation products, visit www.rainbird.com/drip or call 1-800-RAINBIRD.

Toro Irrigation Chosen to Participate in Southern Nevada Water Authority Study

As part of an on-going, aggressive effort to manage landscape watering, Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has chosen Toro Irrigation to develop and provide a user-friendly device designed to automatically keep residential irrigation watering schedules in compliance with SNWA’s Watering Group Program. Called the Watering Group Assistant, the device can easily be connected to a homeowners existing controller. Once installed, it assures that the watering schedule is always in compliance with SNWA’s seasonal watering restrictions. As a result, well-intentioned homeowners wanting to comply with watering restrictions, but forgetting to reprogram their timers, will no longer risk being cited or fined for watering outside the designated times. More importantly, SNWA anticipates that automated compliance may save millions of gallons of water that would otherwise be wasted.

SNWA selected five different vendors to provide prototypes and plans to install all units later this summer. A study to validate the performance of the units will be conducted after a one year test period, after which time homeowners will be surveyed and SNWA will pick the winning design(s) for future use. Evaluation will be based on overall performance, ease of installation and esthetics; categories that Toro hopes will make the Watering Group Assistant a winner.
